In the 1960s Gleeson was engaged by the P&O Line to give lectures on European art to passengers going to Europe and on Australian art to those coming to Australia. This provided the basis for his book, 'Masterpieces of Australian Art' (1969), and for his three-volume introduction to Australian colonial, impressionist and modern painters (1971).
