On March 18, 1911 the State Legislature officially declared the Sego Lily the official state flower of Utah. The Mormon Pioneers, the first non-Native Americans to settle the Great Salt Lake Area, experienced a shortage of food from 1840-1851. Crickets had destroyed many of the crops in between those years, forcing the pioneers to find.

Sego Lilies, the Utah State flower. This plant is responsible for staving the hunger of the Mormon pioneers many times. They retained their color to some extent after cooking, thus making a colorful dish. The pioneers of 1848-49 ate the sego lily bulb to help ward off starvation.

The Sego Lily is the official state flower of Utah and carries significant meaning and symbolism. It is a sacred plant in Native American legend and derived its name from the Shoshonean word for "edible bulb." The flower thrives in harsh desert-like conditions and blooms in May and June, showcasing its tenacity.

The Utah state flower is scientifically known as the sego lily, or the Calochortus gunnisonii or Calochortus nuttalli. It is popularly known as Mariposa lily, and it is an ornamental plant. What is more, the Calochortus is a genus of a range of 65 species that also include mariposa and sego lilies.

It's been a banner year for our state flower. The sego lily has graced our meadows since early June, now in its late stages at lower elevations. It has generated many stories in our state.
