Suggestion is to start some new games in 1901, 1951, 2001, 2021, check what types of rail are available, place a depot and see how the "NewGrf" set you have built, behaves. As usual "NewGRF List" [wiki.openttd.org] is your friend: check the "Industries and Landscape" section. This is a good place to start.

One thing to note in FIRS: None of the primary industries, like the oil rig and oil wells, require supplies in order to produce your raw materials.

You can jump right into FIRS gameplay. There are familiar industries and cargos you'll recognise from default OpenTTD. FIRS also adds lots of exciting new cargos and industries to play with. Primary industries like mines and farms will always produce some cargo. Secondary industries like the steel mill and cement plant will always produce some.
