Anyway, I noticed on the wiki the other day that it says Asuma was married to Kurenai. I was pretty confused by this, since it was never mentioned at all in the series.

He wanted Shikamaru to know that so if anything happened to Asuma, Shikamaru would protect the "King" aka Mirai Sarutobi. The "King" as Shikamaru came to realize were the people that he held dear.
