This article provides a list of the monarchs of Thailand, from the Sukhothai Kingdom in 1238 to the present day. The article also explains the titles and naming conventions used for Thai monarchs. The monarch's regnal name may differ from their birth name or their posthumous name. The Western title "King of Siam" was adopted by King Mongkut (Rama IV) in the 19th century, and the kingdom's name.

The known history of the monarchy of Thailand begins with the founding of the Sukhothai Kingdom, inaugurated by Si Inthrathit in 1238. This was succeeded by the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the short-lived Thonburi Kingdom. The present reigning dynasty, the Chakri Dynasty, took the throne in 1782, founding the Rattanakosin Kingdom.

History Origin The current concept of Thai kingship evolved through 800 years of absolute rule. The first king of a unified Thailand was the founder of the Kingdom of Sukhothai, King Sri Indraditya, in 1238. [3] The idea of this early kingship is said to be based on two concepts derived from Hinduism and Theravada Buddhist beliefs.

The first Thai king of the Chakri Dynasty, a dynasty that still rules the country today, was Chao Phraya Chakri, a contemporary general of King Taksin of the Thonburi Dynasty. Chao Phraya Chakri or Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok also known as Rama I ruled the country from 1782 until 1809.

Rama II - King Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (1767-1824) King Rama II, whose official formal title was Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai, ascended the throne in 1809 and ruled for almost 15 years.
