Coralline & Binsey Walk, Thamesmead, London - Collard Collard were delighted to have successfully completed the £5.8m demolition and enabling works contract at Binsey and Coralline walk in Thamesmead. This project was split into two distinct phases with the completion of one leading the start of the other.

The area currently being taken down is Binsey Walk. Homes here offered great views over Southmere Lake. Upon completion these buildings had 10,000 visitors arrive in just one year from 30 countries to take a look around at the future. In place of these long blighted homes will be Peabody's new blocks.

Vague plans for Binsey walk all there is after years of land ownership. This being Peabody, there's no submitted plan for housing on the neighbouring plot though they flattened the area at Binsey Walk in 2019. Homes to north demolished in June 2019. There's not even any final design drawn up - so it will be years before any work begins.

Next to Southmere, on the site of the former Binsey Walk development, is the second phase of the South Thamesmead regeneration. The site is part of the Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead Housing Zone. We were granted outline planning permission in 2016 for 329 new homes (42% of which will be affordable).

The main sequence of Kubrick's filming took place behind Binsey Walk and a large gap now exists where the buildings once curved around the marina's water. All of the entranceways are closed off, with only one opening left where the bins were once kept, now occupied by a few homeless people.

In the mid-1960s, a vast concrete housing estate began to rise out of a neglected marshland on the south bank of the River Thames. Headed by the Greater London Council (GLC), the scheme was seen as visionary; Thamesmead would provide a marina-esque lifestyle with plenty of greenery, and wide walkways that connected housing with schools and local amenities, all set within striking brutalist.
