Stanton Harcourt. "STANTON-HARCOURT, a parish in the hundred of Wootton, county Oxford, 5 miles S.E. of Witney, its post town, and 5 W. of Oxford. The village, which is chiefly agricultural, is situated near the river Thames and the Windrush. The parish includes the hamlets of Sutton and West End. This place was granted by Adeliza, second wife.

In 1579 Walter leased Stanton Harcourt to his uncle Robert Harcourt as security on debts of £3,000; in 1595 his Oxfordshire lands were temporarily seized for non-payment of loans. (fn. 39) In 1602 he conveyed the manor to his son Robert (d. 1630), the traveller and speculator, with whom in 1604 he sold the South Leigh part of the estate. (fn. 40)

About Stanton Harcourt is a small, attractive village dating from a Bronze Age settlement. The Harcourt family resided there between the 12th and 18th century and the fine Norman church contains the tomb of Robert Harcourt, Henry Tudor's standard bearer at Bosworth Field (1485) and the remains of the standard hang above his tomb.
